| Christchurch Gilbert and Sullivan Society sail into their eighth production, The Gondoliers, with courage not always matched by their conviction. There are honourable exceptions and chorus work is enjoyable. They are blessed, too, with an orchestra of merit under the indefatigable Nigel Finch. The undoubted stars on the Regent Centre stage are that pocket Pavarotti, Terry Trickett, and soprano Penelope Paige Clarke. | Both give animated performances as leading gondolier Marco, and contadina Gianetta. The disparity in their heights adds to the comedy which is a joy. Each is outstanding vocally also. Their partners in the lead quartet are Margaret Goddard and Francis Landi. Other principal roles are capably played by Leonard Godfrey as the Duke and Martin Barradell as the Grand Inquisitor. Costumes and sets are of a high order. | |||||||||||||
