The true deceiver may well be a perfect book not a word is wasted and nothing is dumbed down it is in turns complex and subtle psychologically astute unsettling and controlled not a word is wasted and nothing is dumbed down it is in turns complex and subtle psychologically astute unsettling and controlled. The true deceiver 1982 swedish den rliga bedragaren lit the honest deceiver is a novel by swedish finnish author tove jansson it was translated into english by thomas teal and won the best translated book award in 2011. The true deceiver is the story of an aging woman artist anna aemelin who lives alone on the outskirts of small village snow bound as the opening pages reveal its stillness and propensity for chatter. On the patronising assumption that books for children are nice ie morally bland and stylistically infantile critics reviewers and prize juries often dismiss those who write them as incapable of writing seriously for adults a prejudice which transferred to painting plays a part in the plot of the true deceiver. Very well written the true deceiver is an atmospheric and unsettling story made more unsettling by the very occasional shift from an omniscient narrator to katris first person account even without any clear resolution it is very satisfying recommended
